This is a very good porcelain covered bowl, complete with lid, having a very decorative chinoiserie pattern, number 2829 made by Davenport & Co. of Longport, Staffordshire, England, circa 1860.
This twin handled covered bowl was probably a sugar bowl or sucrier but could have also been used as a Desert Tureen.
The bowl is well potted with a slightly everted rim and sits on a low pedestal foot. It has two high loop handles, one to either side. The lid is also well potted with a looping knob to its top. Both pieces are decorated with an under-glaze, blue-grey transfer printed Chinoiserie ( Imari) pattern, which has then been hand painted with coloured enamels of burnt orange, salmon, cobalt blue and yellow gilt, all in good detail. The base is fully marked with a dark blue printed Davenport anchor mark together with the pattern number, 2829 and painters mark, hand painted in iron red, all indicating a date of 1850-1870.
Overall a very distinctive and decorative piece of mid-19th century English porcelain by the Davenport factory, with multiple uses as a serving piece or for decoration.
