This is a beautifully handmade hardwood lidded box, with brass inlayed decoration to the lid, which we attribute to being made in Japan during the early 20th century, Taisho period, circa 1920.

The box has an oblong shape with rounded edges and a slightly domed lid. This is a very decorative finely handmade lidded box made of polished hardwood. The lid has a hand inlaid decoration of brass with fine detail which is quite hard to photograph. The decoration shows a scene of a lady sat on a bench beneath an overhanging tree on a verandah setting. The lady could be playing a musical instrument, possibly a lute. The inside of the box and inner lid are finished in black laquer. The wood is very smooth with a good colour, and patination from polishing and use over the years. The base shows wear to the inner edges where it has been sat on a surface, all consistent with its age and use.

Overall a fine high quality Japanese box
