This is a boxwood Netsuke, modelled as a Sage, probably Chinese, which we attribute to a Japanese maker, circa 1920.
This piece is of good quality and very well carved showing a Chinese sage or immortal holding a scroll. The carving is very detailed with very good detail particularly the folds of the material of his cloak. the piece has an excellent patinated colour and is well polished from handling.
There is a makers mark to the base.
