This is a boxwood Netsuke, modelled as a Sage, probably Chinese, which we attribute to a Japanese maker, circa 1900.
This piece is of good quality and very well hand carved, showing a Chinese sage or immortal with a long flowing cloak. He is holding a sack carried over one shoulder, with a string of beads around the wrist of his other hand. The carving is very detailed - see facial features. The piece has two holes to the lower back to take a toggle fastener. This piece has a good depth of colour with excellent patination from repeated handling.
We date this piece to the late Meiji / early Taisho period, Circa 1900 but could be earlier in the 19th Century. There is a makers mark scribed to the base.
