This is a good, very early Masons ironstone Large hydra jug or pitcher, dating to the early 19th century period of George 111, Circa 1818.

The jug is well potted in the octagonal hydra shape with a snake handle. It has typical early Mason's characteristics:- hand-painted in a free flowing style with a bold pattern over an underglaze blue printed outline.

This pattern is the well documented chinoiserie pattern called Bamboo and Basket as illustrated on Page 106 of Mason's Guide to Patent ironstone Patterns, published by the Mason's Collectors' Club. The jugs is marked to the base with one of the earliest blue printed marks; the large crowned wide spaced MASON'S with "Patent ironstone China" in the banner indicating a date of 1815 to 1820..
