This is a very good, high quality vintage English handmade, boxwood "weighted" chess set club game of 32 pieces, Staunton Pattern No. 5 all in its original box and retailed by The British Chess Magazine Ltd, dating to Circa 1930.

The chess pieces are made of turned, carved and polished / varnished boxwood, with good detail in the Staunton Pattern N0. 5 as stated on the box. The bases of the pieces are "weighted" with lead inserts set into the bases, which are covered in a green felt which may have been replaced. Weighted sets like this one have a much nicer "feel" when playing. This is a large size Club or Tournament Set.

Large Size: Kings: 9 cm; Pawns: 4.7 cm

The set comes complete with its lidded box, having the British chess Magazine label to the lid. The box looks to be original to the set. This set was once owned by The Locomotive Chess Club of Basingstoke, UK

Overall a good quality, weighted Chess Set of Club or Tournament Size, all in very good condition.
